Nonetheless

How disappointing
and lonely it is
that even when we do the right thing
we suffer the collateral damage;
and even a clear conscience
becomes a cold companion

It’s the reason why
good soldiers quit
and lay down their honor in defeat

Yet
I believe
we have to find a Nonetheless –
an “I do” to life’s proposal.
Call it spine, or will, or guts:
our evergreen in embers
that still rises, loves and trusts.
